An Amazon Best Book of February 2018: I'll be honest: When I first started this book, I almost put it straight back down. The opening scene of the author's teenage encounter with a stranger on an isolated hiking trail made me want to look away from the page itself, unwilling to read farther…but O'Farrell's writing coaxed me on. And I'm so glad I continued. Because this is a book not about the life-or-death moments balanced on a knife's edge (sometimes literally) but about the keen awareness of being alive that goes hand-in-hand with terror. The smell of cinnamon, the sound of agitated elephants on a beach, the soft belly fur of newborn kittens, and O'Farrell's own restlessness that urges her to keep moving, keep exploring, keep pushing forward, embrace and enhance the bitter seeds of fear from which these events are born. As she relates her stories in a nonlinear fashion, glimpses of O'Farrell's biography snap into place like puzzle pieces. The end of the book brings no full picture, however, for hers is an existence still creating its own destiny. Readers who were moved by The Last Lecture or When Breath Comes Air will find similar moments of affirmation here by a writer who has chosen to embrace the calamities that come with a life lived with curiosity and passion. —Adrian Liang, Amazon Book Review

As Heard on Fresh Air Amazon’s Best Picks for February"I Am I Am I Am is a gripping and glorious investigation of death that leaves the reader feeling breathless, grateful, and fully alive. Maggie O’Farrell is a miracle in every sense. I will never forget this book." —Ann Patchett “It takes a deft storyteller to alternate between charming and terrifying on the page but here it is, a set of linked stories that play with that most curious fact: that we experience life’s joys and losses in the context of a mortal vessel. I would follow Maggie Farrell anywhere, even to the edge of death seventeen times.” —Kelly Corrigan, New York Times bestselling author of The Middle Place, Glitter and Glue and Tell Me More "Heart-stopping... Genius... Maggie O'Farrell turned 17 near-death experiences into a literary masterwork " —Entertainment Weekly "With stunning language and inventiveness, Maggie O’Farrell unpacks these moments...so brilliantly, uncovering in the particulars of each those shining, universal experiences, that they are a pleasure to read. And, indeed, difficult to stop reading... There are echoes of Virginia Woolf not just in the rhythm of the prose but also in its dreamlike immediacy. The effect, ingeniously, is of a life told through the gaps, those near misses, on the eluding of which the rest of life hangs." —The Wall Street Journal "As its title suggests, [I Am, I Am, I Am's] pounding pulse is ultimately life-affirming. It's an extraordinary book, a reminder that while life has its limits and can be unpredictable, we should push against limitations and not give in to fear. It is also, like O'Farrell's seven intricately constructed, blissfully absorbing novels, full of surprises." —NPR“This intense, unsparing memoir is less about death than about chance, risk and the gift of another day.” —People Magazine“A page-turner of a memoir . . . . O’Farrell describes in beautiful prose her many near-death experiences, at once demonstrating the fragility of life—and its preciousness.” —Elle Magazine “New and Noteworthy” (March 2018) “Gripping…this breathtaking memoir weaves together the author's near-death experiences to create a fully realized picture of what it means to fully live a life… O'Farrell's memoir contemplates not just the frailty of life, but the fortitude of the human spirit in the face of it all.” —Bustle “[I AM, I AM, I AM is] impossible to miss.” —Paste / 10 of the Best Books of February "Bold... clever and poignant, thought provoking and deeply affective." —Goop "Her stories are harrowing, but the purpose of these essays is not to frighten. It is to affirm. She did not die; she lived through all of these experiences and now recounts each one in vivid, fully alive detail — remembering the feeling of the wind in her hair, the roughness of the grass, the jolt of the plane, the sharpness of the machete." —Minneapolis-Star Tribune "Not a single false moment...What makes this memoir so fine, so special, is not just the power of these brushes with death, but her examination of them...The book is quite intimate in all senses of the word—physically, psychologically, mentally, and emotionally. There is something truly generous about her style. Reading this memoir is like being taken further and further through the layers of a human life down to some mysterious core from which all meaning emanates. It shows us what it means to be vulnerably alive, to digest the seemingly indigestible fact of our mortality. This is a memoir to be cherished." —The Rumpus “Astounding…awe-inspiring…a tour de force” —Booklist, starred review Praise from the UK: “A rich celebration of every breath O’Farrell has taken.” —The Independent “Where other writers may be playing with paper, O’Farrell takes up a bow and arrow and aims at the human heart.” —The Times “Extraordinary… uncomfortable and compelling – a page turner… Fluent, poised, packed with colourful details. Her prose seems invulnerable. It has the sheen of fiction.” —Guardian, Book of the Month, August 2017 “O’Farrell emerges as determined, loyal, fierce and stoic; not to be messed with… The message is that we must live in the moment, finding joy and freedom where we can, but O’Farrell writes so convincingly about the peril that each episode just serves as another detailed, technicolour reminder that we, and more terrifyingly, our loved ones, are only ever one bad decision, faulty choice or sliver of ill-fortune away from catastrophe. This is a mesmerising read.” —Sunday Times “O’Farrell has a compelling and arresting writing style that fills in a scene quickly and engagingly, to great dramatic and narrative effect… It is heady, engaging stuff – a bristling, rollercoaster of a read.” —New Statesman “Electric… Astonishing… Should be read by everyone… Affecting: wise, terrifying, vital and important… I can count on one hand the books that made me cry and still have two fingers spare. I Am, I Am, I Am is one of them.” —Irish Times

Once I settled in to Maggie O’Farrell’s memoir I AM, I AM, I AM: SEVENTEEN BRUSHES WITH DEATH about her near misses with death, I realized that each experience was so much more than a story about how she came close to dying. O’Farrell captures these varied near misses, if you will, but with a twist. She portrays a powerful way of looking not just at death, but at precious life. She has an ability to mold extremely intense events, some horrific, others so instantaneous, you are left wondering how she survived all the while remembering such vivid details without shriveling up and well, wanting to die.Not that any of O’Farrell’s incidents are any less daunting than the next, but one left quite an impression on me. Monumental tears gave way and I struggled to get through as she recalled this time in her life. While not everyone has the same shared experiences, once we realize that we do have similar emotions, I think our ability to have compassion for one another is strengthened.
A beautiful, tender, vulnerable memoir. It made me remember moments when I too could have been in the path of disaster, and how I've just brushed them aside. O'Farrell's writing is wonderful, crisp; her eye astute to the details and delights around her.
I admit I was a tad apprehensive, initially, re reading this book ... I was very pleasantly surprised! Although the author describes her many near death experiences, it is not at all maudlin or misery making. Rather, it is an insight into the author's life and a salient reminder of all the very small moments and the 'what-if' experiences which occur regularly as we go about our daily lives. It served as yet another reminder to me to be appreciative of our blessings, savour the moments, and not get bogged down by inconsequential stuff.
I Am, I Am, I Am is Maggie O’Farrell’s astonishing memoir of the near-death experiences that have punctuated and defined her life. The childhood illness that left her bedridden for a year, which she was not expected to survive. A teenage yearning to escape that nearly ended in disaster. An encounter with a disturbed man on a remote path. And, most terrifying of all, an ongoing, daily struggle to protect her daughter–for whom this book was written–from a condition that leaves her unimaginably vulnerable to life’s myriad dangers. Seventeen discrete encounters with Maggie at different ages, in different locations, reveal a whole life in a series of tense, visceral snapshots. In taut prose that vibrates with electricity and restrained emotion, O’Farrell captures the perils running just beneath the surface, and illuminates the preciousness, beauty, and mysteries of life itself. My Thoughts: From a brilliant writer comes this beautiful memoir that kept me turning pages and astonished at everything coming forth. I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death reads like fiction, as surely these life moments could not possibly be real. The author’s own near misses with death are revealed in an anecdotal style, going back and forth in time in a non-linear fashion, and each sequence of events reveals the intensity of those moments in an unforgettable narrative. From grave illnesses to dreadful accidents, from challenges in her pregnancies to the horrific life-threatening condition of one of her daughters, we are astounded by the overwhelming odds she has faced. But instead of a “poor me†reaction, she gives us her gratitude and the overwhelming fortune she has had to still be alive, and for her daughter to have come through these experiences, also a survivor.A memorable story that reminds us of all of life’s blessings, even in the face of adversities. 5 stars.
I quite enjoyed reading this book, although after a few tales of how Maggie O'Farrell survived brushes with death I began to get a bit bored - after all, the outcome was never in doubt as she wouldn't have been around to write the book if she hadn't survived. She saved the best 'til last, though. The story of how her cerebellum was hit by a virus one fine morning and her huge struggle - aided and abetted by parents, doctors, physios and many ordinary people - to survive something so horrendous and unexpected was riveting. The story of her daughter's lack of the wherewithal to fight off allergies of all descriptions is equally absorbing. So, I think Maggie O'Farrell writes well, and I'll read more of her books and I wish her well and hope she doesn't have any more brushes with death, until she's much older at least!
I have read three of her novels and count Maggie O’Farrell as one of my favorite writers and I know I have to get to those that I haven’t read. This memoir is as beautifully written as her novels. O’Farrell shares with us some very personal experiences, memories of times in her life when she was in danger, close to death. As in her novels, she had me feeling and thinking about the complexities of life, sometimes the danger that lies near all of us. While she writes about things that happened to her, some of these are things that others can relate to - miscarriages, the heartbreaking emotional difficulty of acceptance and understanding, illness that impacts your life, a child’s illness, and some things that most of us have not likely experienced - being mugged at knifepoint, the impending danger of being stopped by a stranger in a deserted road. We see a vulnerability that we can recognize in ourselves as she reveals so much of her feelings and thought processes. All of this making me so very glad that she had this moment:“And, one night, in the monsoon season, when the rain is a constant, lulling hum outside the windows, when our clothes, the windows, the pictures are growing mould in the humidity and it’s too hot to sleep, when I have been reading subversive versions of European folktales, I get the urge to put down some words. I get up, find a pencil, open an exercise book at the table and as Anton sleeps, I start to write.â€
